Norton Canes Boatbuilders Ltd at Glascote Basin is a centre for narrowboat excellence, including boat building, boat fitting, maintenance, repairs, and brokerage (narrowboat sales).

The standard of our boat building is respected throughout the industry and is cherished by our proud owners. We have a wide range of facilities on site, including a range of workshops and a covered dry dock for surveys, blacking, painting, and repairs. Our permanent boatyard staff consists of 15 skilled professionals with decades of expertise in carpentry, steelwork, engineering, painting, and signwriting.

We offer a comprehensive brokerage service, principally at our Glascote Basin site near Tamworth, but also at our moorings in Norton Canes. Our central location in the heart of the Midlands gives us easy access to the entire canal network. (Our original Norton Canes site now operates as moorings only). Our knowledgeable staff are highly experienced in valuing and selling boats and can guide customers through every stage of the selling and purchasing process.

Norton Canes was established in 1986 when Graham Edgson took over an established boatbuilding business from Malcolm Braine. For over 30 years Graham and his team applied their engineering and fabrication skills to produce traditional style canal boats with fine lines, sweet curves and exquisite balance.

After moving to Glascote Basin on the Coventry Canal in 2015, Graham's daughter Sarah Edgson took over the day to day running of the business, having worked for many years in the family business, and gained valuable experience of brokerage working with Dominic Miles at Rugby Boat Sales. A true narrowboat enthusiast, Sarah owns the ex-working craft Narrowboat Lamprey and serves as Chair of the Historic Narrowboat Club, which aims to preserve the traditions of our canal network.

Brave Lady is an exciting project for a keen boater. She's a traditional 60 foot narrowboat built in 1992 by Gary Gorton who has a reputation for having built good quality, strong narrowboats. She has been with the same family since new and is now ready for a new chapter. She has a traditional engine room with a Perkins engine. Musetta - 60ft Louis Wilson / Norton Canes narrowboat, 2023
The character “Musetta” in Puccini’s opera “La Boheme” boasts of her good looks which draw attention wherever she goes. This is certainly true of the beautiful, traditional craft-painted narrowboat that bears her name. Built to a reverse layout by Norton Canes on a hull by Tyler Wilson, with a Beta 43hp engine and both bow and stern thrusters, Musetta is easily manoeuvrable in almost any circumstances. Just under two years old and little used she has a number of outstanding features, some of which were only recently fitted. Her owners sought to create a high sp... read more

Arcturus - 60ft Steve Hudson trad narrowboat, 2000
Arcturus is a beautiful 60 foot long traditional narrowboat built by Steve Hudson in 2000. The cabin exterior was smartly painted in classic forest green in 2023 and she was last blacked with 2 pack in 2019. The traditional paintwork on the bow and stern doors and in the boatman's cabin is really spectacular. She has a Lister engine which was recently serviced in April 2025, and we are told that it had been serviced regularly before that. The electrics are fully 12 volt and the three 110AH leisure batteries are only two years old. There is a Morso Squirrel Stove in the saloon. The cabinet... read more
