St Crispin has been my home for more than 15 years. Life moves on and it is time to sell.
She is a quality 40ft Colecraft narrowboat from the mid-80s, well-built, and well-maintained in the time I’ve owned her.
She comes with a lovely mooring in Oxford, which is a rare find, and a great way to get a home on a boat in the city.
Residential moorings are not common in Oxford and this one is exceptional. It not only has all the facilities for live-aboard boaters (mailbox, piped water supply right by the boat, 240 electricity, refuse removal and sewage disposal) but it’s also delightful. The setting is sublime, with plenty of mature trees and abundant wildlife. You can see kingfishers daily, owls occasionally, and a cuckoo if you’re lucky. I’ve even spotted otters. There are about a dozen boats moored here, with a friendly community of boaters. The Isis Farmhouse is the local pub. The location is a restful old orchard just south of the city and the Donnington Bridge Road, accessed over land by footpaths and with on-street parking nearby. The water is the Weirs Mill Stream, but it’s easy to reach the main Thames, and from there adventure awaits.
The boat is ready to cruise...
There’s a very large water tank (estimated approx. 700ltrs).
Gas locker has space for two 13kg propane cylinders.
Bow outdoor seating area.
Salon or ‘living room’ includes a bench seat, stools and a fold-out table, shelves, and the Morso Squirrel solid fuel stove for burning coal or logs over winter (the Squirrel can make the boat pretty toasty, but there’s also an oil-filled 240v radiator to take the chill off the mornings).
Kitchen has gas oven and two-ring hob, microwave, kettle, toaster, 240v fridge (runs from the mains, or off the inverter), small washing machine, and Gas-fuelled water heater.
Toilet is a Thetford portapotty
Shower is small and simple.
There are a couple of built-in cupboards.
Bedroom has a small double bed and bookcase. There is a side hatch in the bedroom (a joy to throw open in the summer. You can feed the swans from the comfort of your own bed).
Tongue and groove above the gunwales throughout. All the windows have nicely fitted blinds, curtains, or shutters.
Engineroom contains the reliable keel-cooled Mitsubishi diesel engine plus all the batteries and electrical stuff (and all the pots of paint, cans of grease, containers of oil, etc)
There are three leisure batteries and a separate starter batter with a split charge relay arrangement. Batteries charge from the 240v charger when plugged to mains power. Or from the solar panel 200w monocrystalline solar panel and 20A mppt solar controller when you are cruising and away from the mooring.
You’ll have 240v electricity from the mains when plugged in at the mooring, but most of the electrics (lights, fans, USB sockets) run off the 12volt leisure batteries.
The Sterling inverter can be used to provide 240v power from the 12volt system if required.
The uncommonly large diesel tank is at the rear.
The Boat Safety Scheme certificate was completed August 2023, valid until 2027.
Out of water hull survey in September 2023 found no issues of concern.
Mooring rent amounts to about £250 per month for St Crispin currently. Council tax and utilities are also payable
